CPCU Society immediate past president Jim Britt, CPCU, is the subject of an interview in the 2008 third quarter edition of Physician Insurer, the magazine of the Physician Insurers Association of America. Britt discusses the value of the CPCU® designation, recent changes in underwriting practices, and several other important issues. Read the article. (pdf)

James L. Britt, CPCU, 2007-2008 Society president, is quoted at length in “Sifting Through the Alphabet Soup of Designations,” appearing in the June 1, 2008, issue of Risk and Insurance magazine. In the article, which assesses the various insurance industry educational designations that have emerged over the years, Britt compares the value of an MBA to the CPCU in terms of advancing one’s career. He believes obtaining the CPCU first demonstrates a person’s commitment to the insurance industry, and that it carries more prestige. He says it is the “highest credential in the industry” because it is so difficult to obtain – much more so than the ARM. Britt advises going for an MBA, if one pursues that route, after obtaining the CPCU. This is a very informative article for those wishing to know more about the numerous insurance designations that are available and their relative merits.

James L. Britt, CPCU, 2007-2008 CPCU Society president, is extensively quoted in “The Main Ingredients,” appearing in the April 15, 2008, issue of Risk and Insurance Magazine. In the article, which describes what kind of people become underwriters, Britt calls upon his decades of experience in the insurance industry to focus on certain characteristics. He observes that underwriters need to be skeptics, that they have to be quick on their feet, that they require great communications skills, and that they must harbor a devotion to the culture and mission of their employers. This is an outstanding piece for anyone wanting to understand the role of the underwriter in the insuring process.
